The Penn State child sex abuse scandal is now in the news following recent revelations of how the Boy Scouts of America have systematically covered up abuse allegations and protected known abusers for decades. We are still learning of the extent of the abuse and cover ups in the Catholic Church and almost daily learn of a new episode with a teacher and underage student. In a society which values children, how can this be so widespread?
People who experienced childhood abuse will desire to act this out on children unless there is a therapeutic intervention. The damage of abuse is far reaching and described as “soul murder” by therapists as the victims struggle to maintain self esteem and have adult relationships. Those “caught” rationalize well and peers attempt to protect their lives and careers, and the cycle continues.
Only when we as a society truly value our children more than the lives of adult perpetrators will this end. I welcome the news scrutiny as abuse can only continue out of the light of day. Hopefully, this is a turning point.
