Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Moods

A study last fall reported that omega-3 fatty acids could aid in the treatment of mild depression. It had little impact on Major depression, which still requires more definitive treatment. A follow up study revealed that there is a similar effect on anxiety and even Bipolar Type 2 illnesses. Again, major mood disorders are not effected in this study.

The mechanism of action appears to be in the Arachidonic acid activities in the brain. This is actually omega-6, but in involved in many neuropathways and influenced by omega-3. The result is some calming or slowing influence with enhanced mood regulation. Most Psychiatrists found this surprising, as these are common supplements taken for heart and joint health. Fish oil pills will not replace medications for serious psychiatric illnesses or resolve your conflicts, but appear to have some antidepressant and mood stabilizing properties.

In the sea of supplements, we all should choose wisely. It appears the omega-3 fish oil pills have merit. One word of advice: I always buy the low burp kind!
