Lance Armstrong’s fall from grace is nothing short of shocking. How could the revered figure go from idolized role model to millions to disgraced cheater so quickly? And what drove him to do this in the first place?
Armstrong is a lifelong competitor willing to do whatever is necessary to win. All bikers doped during that time. He intimidated his teammates into silence. He did train absurdly hard and overcome cancer. So is he a hero or a monster? Actually neither.
Hero worship comes from us. The idealized object is always used to self nurture. We need heroes to bolster our self esteem. Im not important in my own right, but I’m somebody if connected to you. (I’m a lifetime Cowboy fan by the way!). And, ever meet a sports hero? It’s alway a disappointment. I’ve avoided meeting Roger Staubach through the years because I enjoy the role he plus in my mind! At the end of the day, he’s just another guy.
Armstrong’s fall follows years of media speculation and defense. So much time and energy about races so long ago! And, what he actually did was ride bicycles really well. Live strong is laudable, but not needed to support cancer patients.
And, don’t feel sorry for poor Lance. His estimated personal worth is $125 million dollars and there is not indications he plans to give it back. For riding a bicycle. Be your own hero.
