As we all are still reeling from the reports of yet another mass killing – involving school age children! – the frequency of these events becomes undeniable. Why now? And why is each one worse? What are the causes?
Shooters fall into three psychiatric categories of hardened psychopaths, psychotic delusional persons, or the suicidally depressed. In the US, political terrorists (with the notable exception of 9/11) are rare. We also live in a culture of narcissism and celebrity where we all await our fifteen minutes of fame. The killers are usually disenfranchised, isolated, angry young men.
No word has come out on the psychological profile of the most recent shooter, but he will likely fit the above. Controlling assault weapons makes common sense, but, more importantly, making mental health assessment and treatment reasonably available is paramount. The cuts in mental health have drastically limited those of us in this field from having any impact. I release potentially violent and treatable patients daily due to lack of funding and lax mental health laws. This is fixable.
And finally, maybe we realize our free and safe society no longer is either, and take appropriate precautions each time we leave our homes. This is, by the way, becoming the new normal.
